The Warcraft III classic, rebuilt for the browser. Bots or friends, laptop or phone, nothing to install.

Build before the den opens.

Every round starts quiet. You get 25 gold and earn more every second, and the wolves wait in their den for the first 40 seconds. Spend them. Farms block movement, so every bale you place is wall.

Hay Bales, rendered in the game

Hay Bales

Cost

Health

A cheap 2 by 2 wall of stacked bales. The backbone of every fort.

Hay Bales
A cheap 2 by 2 wall of stacked bales. The backbone of every fort.
Hay Block
A single bale. Plug a gap or block a chaser in a tight lane.
Hedgerow
Planted thin, grows thick. Weak at first, tougher than stone after a minute.
Stone Wall
Dry-stone wall, the toughest thing you can build. Wolves hate these.
Big Barn
A 3 by 3 barn that walls off a big opening in one go.
Windmill
Fragile, but it grinds half a gold every second. Hide it inside your walls.
Beehive
Bees chase any wolf that comes close and slow it by 45 percent.
Shadow Shed
Wolves can't see it unless they place a ward nearby or bump into it.
Scarecrow
Wolves see a sheep until they get close. Use it to pull them away from your fort.

Farms upgrade in place and keep their damage: Hay Bales to Double Bales to Stone Wall, and Windmill to Grain Mill. Shear your fleece for a free Wool Wall.

A sheep slips past a one-tile gap between a hay wall and a hedgerow while a wolf closes in

Leave a gap one tile wide.

Sheep fit through a 1-tile gap. Wolves don't. Build a fort with a sheep-sized door and you can slip out to save a friend while the pack paces outside.

While you build, the ground shows you where a wolf can reach: green where you are safe, red where you are not, including the farm you are about to place.

Then the pack comes.

The den opens and the wolves are out, a little faster than you and happy to bite straight through a wall. Touch a sheep and it's tagged.

Wolf
Fast. Sprint to close a gap, Smash a wall, Howl to reveal every sheep on the map, and drop a Watcher Ward to see what you're hiding.
Shepherd
Slower, hits farms harder. The Torch sets a whole corner of your fort burning at once.

Both buy Iron Claws for more damage and Swift Paws for speed. You can play either side.

A low-poly wolf snarls at the camera, eyes glowing, at dusk
A wolf runs down a sheep in the open meadow
A fort of hay walls at night, every farm lit by a lantern

Survive the last minute.

A tagged sheep loses every farm it built and becomes a spirit in the pen at the middle of the map. Touch a spirit and it's back in the game.

The last minute is night. Wolves get faster, everyone sees less, and your farms light their lanterns. If one sheep is still standing when the clock hits zero, the flock wins.

You're not alone out there. A sheepdog joins after the release and barks wolves back, sheep run faster when they stick together, and a bush will hide you for a moment. It rustles, though, and a sharp wolf will notice.

Where it came from

I grew up playing Sheep Tag in internet cafes. A room full of us, yelling across the rows when a wolf broke through a wall or someone got rescued from the pen with a second to spare. Warcraft III custom games are hard to get running today, so I rebuilt it to run in a browser, on any computer or phone, with nothing to install.

Sheep Tag was a Warcraft III custom map. The community credits Star (Star[MD]) with inventing it, and it grew through many versions after that, including Sheep Tag ReVoLuTiOn by GosuSheep and Chakra (now kept up by verit), versions by XXXandBEER, and Return of the Shepherds by CowardlyShoe. The tag genre goes back to StarCraft's Cat and Mouse maps. This version keeps the rules everyone remembers and adds its own homestead: hedges that grow, beehives, windmills, scarecrows, wool, a sheepdog and nightfall.

Questions

Is Sheep Tag free?

Yes. It runs in your browser with nothing to install and no account.

Can I play on my phone?

Yes. Drag the left side of the screen to walk, tap to move or attack, and drag a farm onto the field to place it. Pinch to zoom.

How do I play with friends?

Choose Online, create a room and send the invite link. Up to 12 people fit in a room, and bots fill any empty seats.

Can I play alone?

Yes. Play against bots on Easy, Normal or Hard, as a sheep or on the hunting side, or start with the two-minute tutorial.

How long is a round?

Eight minutes by default. Custom games run anywhere from 2 to 30 minutes.

Is this the original Warcraft III map?

No. It's a new game built from scratch for the browser, inspired by the map. It's a fan project and isn't affiliated with Blizzard Entertainment.

The den opens in 40 seconds.
